PHP in views

I read in the docs that you can use php in view files

http://www.ionizecms.com/user-guide/gen … views.html

But every time I try to add a bit of php to the view page it seems to just skip over it and just outputs the php code to the page rather than the output.

Any ideas on what i could be doing wrong?

Adam
