News about Ionize : Release 0.9.9 coming soon

The last year, the Ionize project was looking going slower and slower.

Of course, we didn't released any new version during the past year. The 0.9.8 was in development on GitHub, but wasn't never officialy released, even we used it internaly for our clients.

This summer, we had a different look on the product, and we came to these thought :
- Ionize is very great for clients, everybody like it : it is so easy to edit content... OK, good point, Ionize was developped for that,
- For web designers, tags are great, but some syntax looks strange and retrieving articles for some specific usage can become complex. A lot of developpers use too much PHP in the views because of this.
- For developers, Ionize is not enough documented. We know how to create tags and build modules, but we also understand it is currently difficult to start one module development wihtout a basic documentation.
- In the last 2 releases (0.9.6 and 0.9.7), we added and added functionnalities, and finally playing with tags and modules becomes more difficult and the code started to look bloated.

So we started 2 tasks :
1. We had a deeper look at the tag system and we decided to make them more logical and easy to use. The spirit will stay the same, but retrieving data and add conditions will be more easy.
2. Writing documentation, especially one tutorial on how to build a module.

We will never release the 0.9.8.
The next version will be the 0.9.9, with the new tag system, one really better documentation and a lot of concreet examples and good practices.

About the developement status :
- We're currently finishing the "core tags" tests,
- We wrote, for each tag, examples of good usage,
- The tutorial "How to build a module" is written

What needs to be done :
- Testing, testing, testing !
- Write the main documentation
- Convert the demo theme and the built-in modules

About migration from older version :
The new tags approach changes a little the way of retrieving data. Migrating one website to the 0.9.9 will need to rewrite some parts of the views. This can looks annoying, but the new way of using tags is easy to understand and more powerful and opens new perpectives.

I hope these news will make you confident about the Ionize future !

Great news, Michel!

I think you should also post that on the Ionize blog as the last post on it was Friday 13th May 2011 and to casual viewers it would be really encouraging to see an up-to-date post explaining the plan.

@jurlan : It is not the place to discuss about such kind of articles.

Nice to see that this great project is still moving foreward.

It's also great to hear that the module creation documentation is about to get some updates. Hopefully it will help the community to create more modules in the future smile

Re: News about Ionize : Release 0.9.9 coming soon

Hi Martin !

The pre release of the 0.9.9 will be available the 15 of november.
This pre release will come with :
- One "tags theme" with a lot of tags examples,
- One tutorial called "How to build one module" wich details all the steps to build one module and also all the modules possibilities,
- Rewritten tags, wich will make the data retrieve more easy and more logical than ever (don't be afraid, migration of existing websites will be easy and most of the tags have the same syntax)

After this pre release, we need to update the official documentation and write some other useful tutorial.

We expect the 0.9.9 "official" for the 30 of november.
